Energy Pyramid
Next, we will learn about the energy pyramid. When an animal eats another animal, they only get 10% of the energy of the animal they ate. This process goes on until the last animal dies. So, if an animal eats a plant, they will get 10% of the plants energy, and if another animal eats the animal who ate the plant, they will get 10% of 10% of the plants energy. I know, it's a little confusing, so I have an example below of one for you.
This pyramid shows the order in which these things ate one another. The banana was the producer, so it got its energy from the sun. It had 100 kilocalories to start. Then, the fruit fly ate it and got 10% of its energy, so it only got 10 kilocalories. The Toucan ate the fruit fly, and because the fruit fly had only 10 kilocalories, the toucan got 1. When the Jaguar ate the Toucan, the Jaguar got 10% of the Toucans 1 kilocalories, so it got .1 of a kilocalorie.
